A Hidden Society

There is an organisation within the world of WMA that you may not know much about. Its primary goal is not the furtherence of the martial arts of Europe, it has a number of other goals. I'm going to tell you some of the things they say about themselves.

They claim to be “dedicated to the creation of a more evolved human” and they claim to use “magickal rites” in the furtherance of this goal. They are not Wiccan, but they say “the wiccan practitioner and ceremonial magician would find some of our ritual familiar. We differ strongly from most other magical groups in that we invoke our deities purely as aspects of our collective energies; they have been created by us and we do not believe that they are separate and independent intelligences."

I'm trying to stick to quoting objectively from their literature, but I don't think I can. I am utterly gobsmacked by the ridiculous nature of their claims.

They have a “Magical System”, they are “dedicated to the preservation of honor, nobility, arcane wisdom, and martial excellence” they have their own language and have created an entire mythos upon which they base their idea of Chivalry.

They are of course The Order of Selohaar. Don't take my word for it, go look at their site. http://www.selohaar.org/ it's all there for everyone to see.

Most of us have enjoyed the occasional fantasy book or film in the past, some of us probably played role playing games in our youth, but it takes someone very special to dedicate their life to a Pseudo-Medieval Order of “Chivalry” based on their own terrible stories. In all honesty if that sort of thing appeals you'd be better of with Scientology.

That being said I may be wrong (I'm laughing inside at the very possibility), perhaps Sir Christian truly is sent to guide us all and one day we'll all be sitting around reformed concrete garden ornaments wearing poor quality heraldic tabards at one of our “gathers” and the world will truly be a better place. Maybe they will have managed to use their "Magick" (why the hell do wackos always have to put a k on the end of that word?) to create a more evolved human.

But I suspect not.

If you want to join a long established order with a system of morality then try The Freemasons, if you want to wear ridiculous clothes that look like something from an Errol Flynn movie then join the SCA. Of course if you can't get into the Freemasons, and aren't good enough to be awarded enough rank in the SCA then maybe you should join Selohaar, you'll fit right in.

If you're already in The Order of Selohaar, why not drop the crap and simply train the way the rest of us do. You'll get a lot more respect from a lot more people.

Honestly, when I first heard of HEMA/WMA it was these guys and HACA that were the public face that I saw. Even the SCA thought these guys were a joke...seriously when LARPers in plastic armour are laughing at you, something is wrong.

There is TWO Selohaars, one is the order (which has all that you speak of) the second is the Selohaar Fechtschule which has nothing to do with the mystic order.

Some people belong to the one, some just the Fechtschule, a few folks both.

In the Fechtschule, we train just like everybody else. Push ups, running, proper falling, core exercises, solo & paired drills, canon forms, coached freeplay, working from period text...

Two Selohaars you say? Could you enlighten me on the point of the magical order?

The point of the magickal order is to ask our gods to smite down the non believers like you...

The Order of Selohaar is in no way a Secret Society. They have a website for God's sake. I've been to a gather of theirs, and they're a bunch of nicest people I've ever met.

They don't believe in their own set of made up Gods as you so claim. These names are simply created as a device for their ritual, which involves standing in a circle, calling on the 4 elements and the three archetypes, passing a grail as a sign of camaraderie and meditating on the day's events and the future.

On some occasions, the group holds tournaments of arms, and during the winter months, they sit by the fire and hang out, sometimes having seminars and other times, just informal chess tournaments.

The group also attends charity events such as Mud Volleyball Tournaments and Walk for the Cure, as well as making trips to local hospitals and having activities for the children there.

All in all they're just a bunch of nicest people I've ever met, so before you go flaming a group for no reason, why don't you do some research.

And by the way, HEMABOY, why not step up and be a HEMAMAN. You're hiding behind a freaking nickname. Stop being such a pansy and use your real name, eh?

Hello HEMA BOY,

I'm the one you asked about the the 2 Selohaars...

I can't answer your question as I'm not part of the order, just the Fechtschule. I'm trained with CHT for something like 7 years and have only done WMA.

The Fechtschule is based off of the period manuals of the Liechtenauer masters. We work with wrestling, dagger, spear, messer, arming sword, bucker, longsword and poleaxe. We work on our fitness and teach our classes as a martial art... not as a dress up LARP event nor as a reenactment.

It's a bit odd that you let your panties get twisted up in such a wad on this issue as the order has never been hidden, they had a wed site since the mid 1990's, CHT has it linked in his sig on ever forum I've seen his posts at, and it's mentioned in all of his books.

Really, they seems to be more of a mystery over George Silver's meaning of time than the so called "Hidden Society" of Selohaar.

In closing, I'm going to share a quote from of of our Founding Fathers on other peoples beliefs.
"It does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are 20 gods, or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." - Thomas Jefferson, U.S. President.

You could learn a lot lad by living by those words.
